Westcoast & Hip-Hop Icon/Pioneer Ice Cube Signs With Interscope Records, Set To Release 25th Anniversary Edition Of Groundbreaking Death Certificate Album

Legendary emcee, actor, director, screenwriter and overall, one of the greatest entertainers of all-time, Ice Cube has been quite busy recently promoting his new semi-pro, BIG3 basketball league, which is set to debut next month.  He also recently announced that a final installment of his classic movie series, Friday, finally has a green light too.

Even with all of that, still at his core, music is most important to Cube and yesterday, Thursday May 25th, Interscope Records announced the signing of the Westcoast rap icon and pioneer to it’s label.

One of the most important figures in Hip-Hop and Rap history, Ice Cube began his career with the Notorious Westcoast Gangsta Rap Group, N.W.A. well over two decades ago and at the height of the groups success broke away to start his own storied solo career and his acting/director/screenwriting career.

John Janick, Chairman and CEO of Interscope Geffen A&M sounded real “thrilled” about the announcement too.  Having the following to say in a statement as part of a press release on Cube’s new deal with the label, “We are thrilled to announce that Ice Cube has joined the Interscope family.  He’s obviously one of the legendary figures in Hip-Hop…that’s a massive statement on its own, but he’s so much more than that.  Cube has an incredible body of work, and as a fan I’m honored to welcome him to the label.”

The first release under the new deal will be a special 25th Anniversary edition of Ice Cube’s highly controversial and socio-political, critically-acclaimed second album, Death Certificate.  Releasing on June 9th, Death Certificate: 25 Anniversary Edition will feature three new songs; Only On Me, Dominate The Weak and the gruesomely sinister hitting lead single, Good Cop, Bad Cop.  Which will be available as an insta-grat track when the pre-order goes live on June 2nd.

Cube and Interscope’s new deal comes after years of the Gangsta rap pioneer releasing music independently through his own, Lench Mob Records.  So it should be interesting to see how handles being on a major label for the first time since his early days with iconic Hip-Hop/Rap label, Priority Records.  Look for a brand new album from Ice Cube to likely drop later this year or early next year too.
