Ice Cube, Selena, New Edition and John Legend to Receive Stars on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Yesterday, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced it’s 2017 Walk of Fame honorees that will be receiving their own stars on the famed Hollywood Walk of Fame in Hollywood, California.  Among the artists going in for the recording category are legendary emcee and Los Angeles’ very own Ice Cube, the late great singer Selena, legendary R&B/Soul & Pop group New Edition, who were one of the more popular groups of the New jack swing era in the late 1980’s-early 1990’s and current R&B/Soul singer/songwriter John Legend.  The announcement of Cube’s star is one that is well deserved and continues what has been a very great run in these past two-three year’s for the emcee, actor and filmmaker, which saw him and his group N.W.A.’s biopic, Straight Outta Compton, gain critical acclaim, while also breaking box-office records by becoming the highest grossing music biopic of all-time when it was released just last Summer.  Not only that, but this also comes on the heels of Cube and N.W.A. being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just this past April.  Besides his very successful and legendary music career both solo and with N.W.A., Cube has also been one of the most bankable Hollywood stars with his slew of box office films since the early 1990’s, which includes such classic films as Boyz n Da Hood, Friday and the whole Friday series, Barbershop and the very successful Barbershop series, as well as All About the Benjamins among his several hits throughout his illustrious career.

The Queen of Tejano, Selena Quintanilla was one of the most successful recording artists and fashion designers of all-time, whose star was very bright before she was brutally murdered by the president of her fan club in 1995 at just the young age of 23.  So this announcement of Selena getting her own star is one that is very long overdue for the singer, whose death nearly 21 years ago sent many shock waves throughout not only the music industry, but beyond as well.  With her funeral that drew 60,o00 mourners and the great success of her own biopic in 1997, which bore her name and starred a then relatively unknown Jennifer Lopez showing just how.  Even still till this day she is celebrated and praised by so many that I’m sure are very satisfied to see Selena finally getting her own star.

Speaking of biopics, New Edition is also set to have their very own biopic based on their own career released next year and makes it all the more perfect that they are getting their own star in the same year a biopic on them is set to be released.  New Edition spanned many great careers from not only just the group, but all the members solo and/or splinter groups or acts, which included Bobby Brown, Bell Biv DeVoe, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant.  With DeVoe including several of the former group members: Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ron DeVoe, after their first breakup.

Legend has only been recording since the early 2000’s, which makes his honoree of getting a star one of the more questioned ones of the group, even despite such great success in his very short career.  Among the other stars set to receive stars are Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman, Brett Rattner, Tyra Banks, Hugh Laurie, Goldie Hawn, Keri Russell, Eva Longoria, Elvis Duran and several others.

Currently there isn’t any definitive date for the ceremonies of any of the stars in 2017.
