A new video taken by a bystander’s cell phone shows New York City police officers shooting and killing a man they say was threatening them with a knife on Saturday. The witness caught the last several seconds of the chase. About 17 seconds into the video, several gunshots can be heard.

It’s unclear if the phone in question was an iPhone or not, but based on the rather clever way that NBC New York created the streamed video shown here (due to embedding issues), it’s at least being portrayed that way.

In the wake of the artistic and commercial success of The Dark Knight, there was a bit of handwringing throughout the nerd community (the term “nerd,” by the way, has lost any sort of negative connotation, and we use it in that spirit) that film studios would feel the need to create “dark” superhero movies, in which the mise-en-scene is perpetually dimly lit and portents of doom attach to every plot development. The reboot of the Spider-Man franchise is clearly in line with the trend, a shift that’s made more explicit when viewing the newly released official trailer (especially compared to trailer no. 1). Its somber tone is established right away with Peter Parker’s voiceover, decrying his uneasy existence, the opposition of numerous enemies and the mystery surrounding his parents. Thankfully the film isn’t all doom and gloom, as there are thrilling action set pieces in store, along with a good look at the film’s villain, the Lizard. Directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and Denis Leary, The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters July 3rd.

Wake up, iPhone app users: while Instagram, the extremely popular photo-sharing app, was purchased for $1B by Facebook, another sharing app has been quietly moving up the charts in the App Store.

Viddy is free, but the company sells production packs, in-app, that allows users to add visual effects, music, transitions and more from a specific artist. Ones already added to the app include T-Pain, Linkin Park, and Mindless Behavior.

Users can shoot, customize, and share 15-second (the limit of the app) video clips directly from their mobile devices. Sharing is done to (where else) social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

File this one under “sauce for the gander.” An Ohio state senator has introduced a bill which (in the unlikely event there are enough women in the Ohio senate to see that it passes) would regulate Viagra in much the same way as right wingers want to regulate a woman’s access to birth control.
