In what appears to be a landmark decision the Chicago City Council has passed legislation providing a reparations fund for victims of police torture in Chicago. This is stunning news in a time where organizations like Amnesty International’s US division have been looking more closely at home for the human rights abuses we more notably condemn in other countries.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel commented that “Today’s unanimous vote in favor of the reparations fund is “an essential step in righting a wrong”.
