I have never been a fan of the New Year’s resolution. It is normally a time where people pledge to do things that they likely won’t stick to. I will not say that I have never fallen short of one myself. I decided that this year I would not even think of the notion. Over the last few years I have really not made any concrete ones but this year I was determined not to even think on it.
I didn’t go out on New Year’s Eve and I didn’t act is if I recognized that the day even existed . I sat around the house watching movies instead of college football and actually being productive planning things for the coming semester at both school and work and working toward a new goal that I will discuss a little further down the line. I was recently told just how much more that I could be doing with my “ability”.
My “slip was showing” as Ahmet tells Ray Charles Robinson in the film Ray. This was said as Ray’s vices were becoming his addictions and nearly his downfall. What had long been evident to me was now showing to the public. I had become complacent, stagnant and uncharacteristically comfortable. I was not living up to my potential as I became okay with average and normal. I was slacking indeed. Having some personal, professional and academic successes in the year 2009 I must have started to think that I had made it somewhere. Sadly, I was mistaken.
The one thing that I am resolute in coming into this New Year is that I am committed to action. Words on the page and from the mouth can only go so far. It is the action, the movement, which leads to the change. We can plot and plan and discuss and analyze and examine as we see fit, but until we take the necessary steps we go nowhere. That is where I stand today: Nowhere other than where I choose to be. And that is no longer where I choose to be. I will no longer let location; finance and other variables of life restrict me from moving.
If there is a resolution to be found in all of this it is that I will no longer stand aside as others move. I will move and I will learn, I will develop, I will destroy and ultimately I will rebuild. These are all necessary movements in the development of self. I am resolute that this year I will get back to who I am used to being and will move to make not only my life but that of others better. Simple.
This will not only be the year of movement but also year of the “CallOwt!” That means if your “slip is showing” I will let you know, and would hope that you would do the same. The first “CallOwt” of the year goes not to Mr. Eldrick Tont Woods who now realizes just how Black he is. “On To The Next One” © S. Carter. This week’s “CallOwt” Mr. Gilbert Jay Arenas, Jr.
Gilbert your off the court antics have been well documented as has your time on the shelf and your ridiculously obtuse contract. No matter what the circumstances, Agent Zero, of you bringing firearms into the Verizon Center or your exchange with teammate Jarvaris Crittenton went down, Gilbert was just wrong and your punishment will likely go beyond the basketball court and land directly in the courts. Where you neither should be and need not be.
Such a stupid move made by a mercurial, yet very intelligent young man. If there is any benefit from this, and I have a real feeling that even this is a stretch, it would be the Washington Bullets…er Wizards who may be able to find a way to get rid of Gil and his stupid contract and gimpy knees. That is quite possibly the only way that franchise will ever be able to compete again. I also want to make sure that people understand this is not a Plax Burress situation, but also criminally stupid.
Now to further movement on my behalf: I have decided that this is the year that I will write the book. This is also the year that I will get back into the arts. I have interests in writing, poetry, theater and photography and will be including many of these elements in the book. Hopefully what will come of this will be a solid mix of art, essay, poetry and prose. To complete this task I am asking for all of your help.
