Drink the Kool-Aid: FDA Approves Flu Vaccines, Officials Recommend for Everyone 6 Months and Older
Posted in: Health,News,Uncategorized by hiphopdemocrat on July 31, 2010
The Food and Drug Administration said Friday that it had approved vaccines for the next flu season, expected to start in the fall, and health officials are recommending vaccination for everyone 6 months old and older.
Last year’s notorious virus, the pandemic A(H1N1) swine flu, has now become just one of the usual suspects included in a killed or weakened form in the 2010-11 vaccine. People needed two flu shots last year because swine flu had its own separate vaccine; it emerged too late to be included in the seasonal vaccine.
RIM set to join the tablet fray this fall with “Blackpad”
Posted in: News,Technology by hiphopdemocrat on July 31, 2010
Corroborating a rumor from The Wall Street Journal earlier this summer, a new Bloomberg report cited “two people familiar with the company’s plans” to build an iPad-like touchscreen device and release it this fall. Dubbed the “Blackpad,” the device will ostensibly run the as-yet-unreleased BlackBerry OS 6, and help RIM deflect further encroachment from Apple into its declining mobile market share.
Bloomberg’s sources note that the device will rely on BlackBerry’s usual enterprise e-mail advantage, but it will also include features that Apple’s iPad lacks. In particular, it will have both rear and front-facing cameras for video conferencing and image capture, as well as the ability to pair with a BlackBerry phone over Bluetooth to share its 3G connection.
FDA Approves Embryonic Stem Cell Trial Using Patients
Posted in: News,Social Issues by hiphopdemocrat on July 30, 2010
The world’s first authorized test in people of a treatment derived from human embryonic stem cells has been cleared to begin by the Food and Drug Administration.
The trial will test cells developed by Geron Corporation and the University of California, Irvine in patients with new spinal cord injuries.
The F.D.A. had initially cleared the clinical trial in January, 2009, in what was viewed at the time as a research milestone.
But before the study could begin, the agency then put a so-called hold on the trial after cysts were discovered in some mice injected with the cells. Geron had to do another mouse study and develop better ways to check the purity of its cells.

‘Anti-Islamic’ bus ads appear in major US cities
Posted in: News,Social Issues by hiphopdemocrat on July 29, 2010
The growing debate over Islam’s place in America, which is escalating in light of plans to build a mosque near ground zero, is increasingly playing out on city streets across the country. On the sides of buses, to be precise.
Several groups are engaging in something of a religious ad war over the merits and misconceptions of Islam, a religion that remains a mystery to many Americans.
Ads by a group calling itself Stop Islamization of America, which aims to provide refuge for former Muslims, read: “Fatwa on your head? Is your family or community threatening you? Leaving Islam? Got questions? Get answers!”
