More than one Memorial Day
Posted in: News,Obama,Political,Social Issues by SanaArshad on May 31, 2010

Memorial Day was originally observed on May 30th back when it was called Decoration Day, the Civil War era tradition instituted by Northern Army General John Logan who, in 1868 ordered that a day be set aside to decorate the graves of the war dead and to place flowers on the gravesites of comrades who died in defense of their country during the Civil War.
May 30th was chosen because it was the day when the most flowers were said to be in bloom in the old Civil War North.
Gulf oil spill update: Top kill did not work, LMRP Cap is next
Posted in: News,Obama,Political by SanaArshad on May 29, 2010
At a news conference in Robert, Louisiana, BP CEO Doug Suttles announced that top kill did not work and the company will move to its next option which is the LMRP Cap, another version of the original “top hat” procedure that failed. See LMRP Cap diagram below. The first step is to cut and remove the existing riser from the top of the LMRP, then after a clean cut, install the cap to be connected by riser and drill pipe to the Drillship Enterprise. This should be able to capture most of the oil, but no guarantee that it will be successful. The drilling of two relief wells will continue. Previously, the expected completion date for those is sometime in August.

Is Apple about to make a deal with the devil (Microsoft)?
Posted in: Editorials,Legal Issues,Lifestyle by SanaArshad on May 28, 2010

Since the dawn of the modern PC era, Apple and Microsoft have had the type of love-hate relationship that was almost completely missing out on the love part of that equation. But any thinking the relationship was totally devoid of love only need look back to 1997 when Microsoft invested $150 million in Apple, giving the company a much needed injection of cash and Microsoft a cloak of protection from anti-trust litigation.
Flash forward to today and Trip Chowdhry, an analyst with Global Equities Research, believes Apple and Microsoft are on the verge of announcing another partnership at the upcoming Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. The partnership would bring Visual Studio 2010 to the iPhone, iPad and Mac OS development table.
Obama on oil spill: Defends his response as estimates surpass Valdez [Video]

In his first press conference in 10 months, President Obama stands firm by his administration’s action in this Gulf Oil Crisis. Here are two reports on the events of the day. It has been a trying one as BP paused it’s operation Top Kill to assess the progress and resupplied ships to pump in more heavy mud. There appears to be some success, but caution is being used before any celebration. See the live video feed of the under water work at the source of the leak here. This has been a growing thorn in his side as many are calling it his ‘Katrina’. Even outspoken democrat James Carville lashed out against the appearance of ignorance in this interview on Good Morning America. See the video here.

Apple tops Microsoft as most valuable tech company in market
Posted in: News by SanaArshad on May 27, 2010

Microsoft was for a long time the king of technology companies, in terms of their market cap, which is basically a measure of the value of a company based on number of outstanding shares x stock price. The operative word is “was,” as Apple on Wednesday passed Microsoft in terms of market cap.
Apple finished the day at $244.11, meaning its market cap is $222.12B. Meanwhile, Microsoft finished the day at $25.01, or a market cap of $219.18B. It’s the first time Apple has surpassed its longtime rival. Much of Apple’s growth, of course, has been iPhone-driven
