Jamila Woods Pays Tribute To EARTHA, Goes For Old School Vibes In New Black-and-White Video

Homegrown Chicago singer and poet, Jamila Woods, goes for that classic old-school feel in her very amazing new Fatimah Asghar-directed video for her newest single, EARTHA, which was premiered earlier today through Vevo.

Taken from her upcoming highly-anticipated sophomore album, LEGACY! LEGACY!, which is set to drop on May 10th, it was inspired by late great singer, actress, activist, author and songwriter, Eartha Kitt, Woods released the very amazingly soulful new record just a couple of weeks ago and is now back with the just as amazing new accompanying visual.  A black-and-white one that sees the very talented Chicago native go full catwoman, as she pays homage with the unapologetical celebration of femininity and sisterhood that was wide ranging and a staple of what made Kitt so great.

The very old-school black-and-white film vibes that were also so cinematically brilliant really helping bring the record to life too.  Not to mention the simple, yet stellar acting of Indya Moore of the FX show Pose, Langston Kerman of HBO’s Insecure and spoken word artist Safia Elhillo, who all make great features of different scenarios that play out throughout the very stellar new visual that expose different women being routinely undervalued and under-appreciated.  While Jamila herself asks who’s going to share her love and makes sure to be specific that it has to match the love that she has for herself, first.  The visual like the record and Eartha herself such major advocates for ensuring that women get all that they deserve.

Asghar, a poet and the best friend of Woods also adding the following in a statement about the inspiration for the video, which was also the first she directed.  “Jamila’s song EARTHA pays homage to Eartha Kitt’s defiant spirit, and her refusal to compromise in a world that is always trying to constrict women and femmes.  In the production, we wanted to reference iconic images of Eartha Kitt and embody her energy to create a celebration of unapologetic femininity and sisterhood, as well as play on and challenge the ways that women have been historically portrayed in cinema by going for an old-school film vibe.  As Eartha taught us, being feminine isn’t just one thing — it’s an incredible range.  That energy permeates the video.”

That very permeatingly graceful and loving energy shown throughout this very amazing new visual, which you can watch below.
