Sevyn Streeter has long been a girl disrupted in this crazy music industry. So it seems quite appropriate that after years of delay and much anticipation for her long-delayed and highly anticipated debut album, Girl Disrupted, the very talented singer/songwriter, who has worked with everyone from Chris Brown to K. Michelle, Usher, Alicia Keys, Brandy and Kelly Rowland, among others, made it well worth the wait with the masterpiece she delivers.
Starting from the very empowering and emotionally energizefull opening record, Livin’, where Sevyn really sets the great and inspiring tone of the whole album. Which really makes you want to shed tears of joy to see how far she has come on her journey to just release her debut album. The drums and production from The-Dream & Tricky Stewart on The-Dream featured Present Situation with her vocals and the laidback 90’s old school sound of the Whitney Houston-sampled lead single, My Love For You, are arguably the best three track sequence to start and set the tone for an album, possibly ever.
Putting all her emotional ups and downs of love, good times, desires, tears, drunken nights and unforgettable memories into one great body of work that brings the soulful old school to the new school. Sevyn uses several samples of classic 80’s and 90’s R&B/Soul records most of us 80’s babies grew up on or have that sound throughout. Most notably on her second single, Before I Do. A very seductively enticing beautifully sultry ballad about a complicated new relationship she isn’t sure she wants to commit to yet and was partially inspired by the late great Aaliyah. Also very noticeable on her third single, Fallin’. A very seductively enticing record featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Cam Wallace, which was inspired by and samples New Edition’s classic hit-record, If It Isn’t Love.
Things get fun on the very fun and soulful, Anything U Want. Where over the very amazing SWV-sampled record, which is another one featuring Ty, as well as Wiz Khalifa and Jeremih, that has Sevyn recalling a wild drunken night that makes her willing to do almost anything for somebody such as a fine man. Ol Skool, meanwhile is a very impressive slow jam that once again features Jeremih, as well as DeJ Loaf. Which finds Sevyn showing how really slick her pengame and vocals are with the low-key slick wordplay on most of the hook. Such as, “Want a 100 percent of your 12 Play, the message you gettin’ in my way. Can you stand the rain like Bobby? Who goin’ keep Keith Sweatin’ ya? Nobody.” Sevyn literally takes fans first a slick fun ride again on the very fun Da Internz-produced, Soon as I Get Home. Which samples the Faith Evans classic of the same name from Evans own classic debut album and is perfectly flipped into an upbeat roller skating rink type song.
The chemistry of Sevyn and August Alsina on the very grown, sexy and very sensually enticing Mr. Bangladesh-produced, Been a Minute, is like actual raw sex being made with how effortlessly their voices and vocals blend together. Two artists at their peak, like two lovers seamlessly making love, it’s by far the best song on the album. On the very grown Hit-Boy and HazeBanga-co-produced, Translation, Sevyn let’s all her feelings out about how she lost her love for a former boyfriend in translation. While the Dave East featured, Peace Sign, is a very sexy and sexually smooth record that’s freaky, but in a sneaky smart way where you can play it at the strip club, regular nightclub or the bedroom.
With those three records arguably the best of the whole album, it’s hard to find three great records to close the album, but Sevyn still manages to do that with, Fallin’, How Many and Everything In Me. Especially on the very emotional banger, How Many. Which is arguably the best written song thus far of Sevyn’s career. The very emotionally raw and honest, The Co-Captains-produced, Everything In Me, is the perfect triumphant record to close out the album and make you feel like shedding tears with how emotionally honest and truthful it’s. Especially with how smooth of a ballad it’s, you can hear all the emotions pour out through her voice and very amazing vocals to close out a very important chapter of her life.
