It’s that time of the year yet again, where everybody gets in to arguments about who did and didn’t deserve nominees, as the nominations for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards were announced on CBS’s This Morning show early this morning.
As expected almost two years exactly to the day of becoming the most nominated woman ever in the history of the Grammys with her six nominations, which were tied with Sam Smith for the most nominations that year, Beyoncé is yet again the most nominated artist for the upcoming Grammy awards. This time with three more nominations for a total of nine and by her lonesome, as the most nominated artist for the upcoming 59th Annual Grammy Awards, which will also air on CBS in a little over a couple of months on Sunday Feb. 12, 2017 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Queen Bey was followed closely behind by Drake, Rihanna and Kanye West, who had eight nominations apiece and even newcomer Chance the Rapper with seven nods. Thus showing Hip-Hop and R&B’s dominance in not only the scope of music as a whole, but the Grammys themselves. You may remember years ago most of Hip-Hop boycotting, The Grammys. Though they still have a long way to go, they got a lot right and have come a long way from the regular boycott’s of the show most Hip-Hop artists had back in the late 80’s to early 90’s.
Beyoncé earned nominations in some of the most coveted categories too with her chart-topping and critically-acclaimed, LEMONADE up for the most coveted award of the night in Album of the Year and also it’s lead single, Formation, up for Record and Song of the Year. Also marking the second time in three years she’s up for the most coveted category of the night. Bey also earned nominations for Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Rock Performance, Best Rap/Sung Performance, Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best Music Video and Best Music Film.
Thus making the singer/songwriter the oldest top nominee and the first artist in Grammys history to be nominated for the Best Pop Solo, Best Rock and Best Rap/Sung Performance.
First-time nominee, Chance, who’s nominated for Best New Artist did something unprecedented and showed Hip-Hop’s true influence in music now by becoming the first artist to be nominated for a streaming-only album too. As his Best Rap Album nomination for his mixtape, Coloring Book, is the first of it’s kind. Also joining a list of talented Chicago acts with several nominees that includes West and BJ the Chicago Kid, who scored three nominations as well.
