New Pharrell – Runnin’

Pharrell has had some pretty incredible success over the years with soundtracks and he looks to continue that streak with his soulful, upbeat and bluesy latest single, Runnin’.  A lot of you may remember a small record called, Happy, off the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack from a couple of years ago that spent two months at #1 on the Billboard charts.  While this very upbeat and empowering latest new song from the Virginia native is the first taste we get from Pharrell and Hans Zimmer, who have teamed up to bring us original new music for the soundtrack to the upcoming highly anticipated new movie, Hidden Figures.  A film starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and singer Janelle Monáe as Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, and tells the untold story that many people don’t know about these three African-American women mathematicians being hired by NASA to be very key figures to a lot of NASA’s first space missions.  On this first song from the soundtrack released this morning by Pharrell, over synth-bass and shuffle drum beat, the VA native details the story of Johnson growing up in West Virginia during the blistering summertime with the uplifting lyrics about women’s rights fitting perfectly with the theme of the film.  As he sings, “From runnin’ to exams to jobs for a man. Don’t act like you was here when you wasn’t/ In the law of the land, the women were often banned/ Don’t act like you was there when you wasn’t.”  Listen below to the groovy new record with its inspiring message and lookout for more new original music from P leading up to films highly anticipated Christmas Day release.
