iPhone video shows deadly NYC police pursuit, shooting

A new video taken by a bystander’s cell phone shows New York City police officers shooting and killing a man they say was threatening them with a knife on Saturday. The witness caught the last several seconds of the chase. About 17 seconds into the video, several gunshots can be heard.

It’s unclear if the phone in question was an iPhone or not, but based on the rather clever way that NBC New York created the streamed video shown here (due to embedding issues), it’s at least being portrayed that way.

Edward Delgado, who works in the area, said, “I was standing at the corner of 42nd Street and saw this guy running in middle of street, police chasing him. He had a machete type knife. He didn’t want to stop. Police told him to drop the knife. He didn’t. They shot him.”

Authorities say they approached the man, who was not carrying identification or a wallet, after they spied him smoking marijuana. He subsequently became belligerent and threatened them.

Cell phone video is becoming more important, both the media and to authorities. Ironically, best cameras on the Mars Curiosity rover are only 2MP in resolution, while those in your iPhone 4S and other smartphones like the Droid 4 and Droid RAZR Maxx are 8MP.
