The hacktivist group Anonymous has released a statement via YouTube stating that Facebook is their next target. For the uninitiated, Anonymous is the group responsible for, most recently, hacking several different law enforcement agencies.
Anonymous offers anyone concerned with the spread of personal information on the web to join the cause and “kill Facebook for the sake of your own privacy”. The date is set for November 5th, 2011. A date, they say, that will go down in history. November 5th, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, named after the gentleman Guy Fawkes, who planned to blow up Parliament in the “infamous” Gun Powder Plot.
Anonymous had this to say in their statement:
“Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from around the world.”
Anonymous states that Facebook is free for users for the sole purpose that their personal information is gathered and says the system remembers all the changes in user profiles, enabling the owners of the social network to recover any information put into the system at any time and recover deleted profiles. Anonymous drives home their point with this message, “Facebook knows more about you than your family.”
