T-Mobile making UMA wi-fi calling free; no minutes required

T-Mobile has confirmed that it is making its popular wi-fi calling feature (on supported Android and BlackBerry phones) free. Earlier, calls made on wi-fi were logged against a user’s minutes.

The new functionality means UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) phones now have a huge bucket of calls they can make, and it extends T-Mobile’s network through the use of wi-fi, as well as reducing the load on their network.

Customers need to have Even More and Even More Plus Postpaid rate plans, and have Wi-Fi Calling capable handsets.

This is just another reason to hope AT&T’s proposed acquisition of T-Mobile isn’t approved (though it probably will be). As the smallest of the big 4 U.S. carriers, and one that’s bleeding subscribers, T-Mobile needs every advantage it can get to keep or get subscribers.

Once acquired by AT&T, this sort of thing will be dumped faster than you can say, “Deal approved.”
