Jail Sentencing Date Set For Buju Banton

Renowned reggae artist Buju Banton faces up to 15 years in prison for his conviction on two drug charges and one weapons charge in 2009.

After a hung jury deadlocked in his first trial, the second trial resulted in a guilty decision, and on June 16th, Banton will face sentencing.

Buju won a Grammy last month for Best Reggae Album for his 2010 LP, Before the Dawn.

Banton’s attorney, David Markus, has asked for his client to be released from custody pending his appeal and has filed a motion for acquittal or a new trial.

The singer, born Mark Myrie is in detention awaiting sentencing. He released this statement thanking his fans for their support:

“Our life and our destiny are sometimes pre-destined; and, no matter where this journey takes me, remember I fought the good fight. It was a great man that said my head is bloody but still unbowed I love you all thank you for your support.”
